A visitor stops at a booth. Three seconds pass. She glances at the product, then at the exhibitor, then down at her phone, and walks away. Not because she was not interested. Because she did not understand what was just said, and she was not about to admit it out loud.
This happens hundreds of times a day at international trade shows and conferences. It is one of the most common reasons a good lead disappears, and almost nobody tracks it, because nothing was technically wrong. The pitch was fine. The product was fine. The language just did not match.
Why "just download the app" never worked
For years, the standard fix on offer was an app. Download this, create an account, grant microphone access, wait for a badge scan, all while standing in a noisy hall with five more booths to see. Most visitors never finished the process. Not out of laziness, but because an event floor is not the moment anyone wants to manage a new install. App fatigue is not a UX footnote. Who this actually helps
Large exhibitors have long solved multilingual coverage with dedicated interpreters and multilingual staff on rotation. That is a legitimate approach, but it is also a five-figure line item most small and mid-sized companies do not have. QR code translation is not trying to replace a professional interpreter on a keynote stage. It solves a different, more common problem: the hundreds of short, spontaneous conversations happening on the show floor at the same time, where booking an interpreter for every single one was never realistic to begin with.
That is really the shift worth naming. The barrier to a multilingual event presence used to be budget. Increasingly, it is just whether you thought to bring the code.
The question worth asking
If you are planning an event, the question is not "does everyone here speak the same language." It is "how many seconds does it take a visitor to understand you, starting from zero." Every second in that gap is a lead, or an attendee, who might not wait around for the answer.
